Internships at DAS

Application dates are flexible, but we recommend that you apply at least 4-6 weeks before you would like to intern with DAS. These are competitive openings, and not all applicants will be accepted.

Most of our internships take place in downtown Atlanta at 2 Peachtree Street, NW, Atlanta 30303. Free parking is not available; however, this location is close to the Five Points MARTA station. We occasionally offer internships in other parts of the state.

Participants may intern Monday-Friday during standard business hours. Interns serve anywhere from two to five days per week, depending on their classes and commitments. 

All DAS interns are expected to have good writing skills, some research experience, basic to high proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel and enthusiasm for issues involving older adults and people with disabilities.

DAS’ internships are open to any motivated, compassionate, intellectually curious student.  We accept successful graduate students and upper-level undergraduates who represent a variety of disciplines such as gerontology, social work, health care administration, communications, public administration, law, criminology, psychology, sociology and other fields.

As Georgia’s state unit on aging, DAS focuses on planning, training, and technical assistance.  If you would like to intern in a direct-service capacity with older adults, we can recommend several fine organizations that could benefit from your help.

Projects vary by semester.  Previous interns have conducted policy research, helped organize statewide meetings, researched best practices in areas such as transportation and assistive technology, tracked the success rates of wellness and employment program participants, shadowed Adult Protective Services staff, helped coordinate dementia-related committee work, developed volunteer recruitment materials, drafted consumer information and more. No, your participation in an internship or volunteer assignment does not obligate DAS to provide you with future employment, special consideration for employment, or information about available job opportunities.  If your performance is excellent, however, we would be glad to provide a reference upon request.
